Public Notice – Town Office Closure to Public and Weather Advisory related to road conditions
Due to current and forecasted weather conditions of extended snowfall into tomorrow, the Town Office is closed to the public today, Monday, January 26th.
Police and Fire Emergency services remain fully operational. The Public Works EMERGENCY LINE for sewer and water leaks is 902-755-4208.
An extended period of snowfall is expected, and with current temperatures, road salt is not effective until temperatures increase. Municipal plowing operations are therefore concentrating on main routes and priority areas.
Residents are strongly advised to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary for an emergency.
The Town of New Glasgow wishes to advise motorists that due to extreme extended weather event hitting the region plow trucks will be operating throughout the storm; however, their focus during this time will include:
Focus on keeping open numbered routes and other major approaches (arterials and emergency routes).
As snowfall intensity decreases, Town equipment will commence snow plowing operations on other streets. Sidewalk operations will commence when practicable.
When visibility and safe operation of equipment is hampered, Snow and Ice Control Equipment will cease until conditions improve.
Once the storm has ceased which is anticipated late Tuesday, January 26, 2026, the following approach is used to restore streets and sidewalks to their normal conditions:
Streets - Priority 1
• Main arterials, including Downtown
• Streets with steep inclines
• Emergency routes to hospital and streets leading to schools
Streets - Priority 2
• Residential routes with medium to low volume traffic
• Gravel roads
• Lanes that fall under the municipality's responsibility
Sidewalk Priority 1
• Sidewalks in school zones and extended areas
• Sidewalks in the Downtown area are the responsibility of the abutting property owner. Refer to Bylaw #34.
Sidewalk Priority 2
• Local streets. One sidewalk will be opened on every street prior to opening a second sidewalk, if practicable. Plowing routes may determine if both sidewalks are cleared.
We ask the public to assist with ensuring their vehicles are not parked on the road during this time as it creates issues for plow crews and minimize their travel to necessary travel only.
In the event you have additional questions about the project feel free to contact the Engineering Department at (902)755-8351 for more information. The Town of New Glasgow Public Works Department regrets any inconvenience this may cause and wishes to thank you for your cooperation.
