Grounds Maintenance Persons (Seasonal/Term Position)

The Town of New Glasgow has openings for Seasonal/Term employees in the Transportation Department.

The successful candidate must be capable of operating power-driven and push lawnmowers, spacing saws, grass trimmers and other related equipment. The candidate must be physically able to perform many varied labor tasks. This may include, but is not limited to, litter pick up, painting, landscaping, brush cutting, trails maintenance, playing/sports field maintenance, and general grounds maintenance duties in varying weather conditions.

The successful candidate shall have a minimum Grade 12 education, a valid driver’s license with a clean abstract, valid WHMIS, and first aid training. Familiarity with the operation of a pickup truck with a utility trailer is considered an asset. Candidates must provide their own approved safety footwear. All other personal protective equipment will be provided by the Town.  

This position will require the person to work in a “team” environment and also be capable of working alone. The successful candidate must have a strong work ethic and a keen sense of safety.

The rate of pay will be in accordance with the CUPE Local 281 / Town of New Glasgow collective agreement. This is a unionized position.

Candidates must be able to start work on May 12th, 2025 and be able to complete the term, ending no later than October 31st, 2025.

Summer Student Employment Position - Maintenance

Job Summary
This role will be to assist ERECC staff with duties normally completed during the summer months. The position will exercise education gained from mechanical and EMT programs (college). Work that would consist of pumping station maintenance, improving aesthetics of ERECC properties and other duties assigned. General labour will be required as part of the role, including but not limited to maintenance of ERECC grounds (mowing and trimming). Individuals should be capable of working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on machinery and equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Work collectively as a team or individual.
  • Conduct facilities maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and repairs performed.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure minimal downtime during maintenance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies while performing all tasks.
  • Maintain ERECC grounds (mowing, trimming).

 

Salary: $18.00/hour: 40 hours per week
Work hours: Monday-Friday 7:30 am-3:30 pm
Duration: Summer

Maintenance Worker – Environmental Services Dept. (Term)

TERM 

Eight-month TERM with potential for Full Time after an Employee Evaluation
NOTE: Probation will apply before being made permanent

The Maintenance Worker (Environmental Services Department) is primarily responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of water and sewer distribution mains (storm and sanitary), service laterals, valves and valve boxes, manholes, catch basins, fire hydrants, and sewer lift stations. Additional Duties of the Maintenance Worker include but are not limited to:

  • Installation, repair, and maintenance of underground municipal infrastructure assets: water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems.
  • Responsible for competently operating heavy equipment related to the operation and maintenance of municipal Excavation experience is critical for this position.
  • Responsible for ensuring their duties are carried out in an effective, efficient, competent, and safe manner in relation to themselves and fellow employees.
  • Perform safe excavations to water and sewer-related work, using an excavator and/or
  • Hydro-excavate for piped infrastructure, services, natural gas lines,
  • Add gravel to utility cuts and other holes in the street to maintain a minimum level of street
  • Prepare streets for capital paving by adjusting manholes, catch basins, and valve
  • Use of video inspection equipment to perform and plan for
  • Perform hydro-excavation and sewer line
  • Operate sidewalk plows, backhoe, loader, and plow/salt trucks in snow clearing
  • Operate excavator, backhoe & loader in day-to-day operations, and snow
  • Operate other equipment and perform labour duties in various pipe installations and all other maintenance and repair projects carried out by the Public Works Department.
  • Follow all applicable Occupational Health & Safety policies & procedures, and those policies & procedures of the Town.

Operator - Class 3

TERM

The Operator Three is primarily responsible for operating equipment used for SNIC, and for off season equipment operation. Other duties may include but are not limited to, long line painting, crosswalk painting, traffic control, carpenter work, grass cutting (using power driven equipment or by hand), concrete work and garbage pickup. The person must be versatile and adapt well to changing work conditions.

The Operator performs all other division duties, including labourer, when so requested by Supervisor or Chargehand. A valid driver’s licence (minimum class 3) with a clean driver’s abstract is required.

Spare Operator - Firefighter

The Spare Operator - Firefighter maintains the required Nova Scotia motor vehicle license Class Three with air brake endorsement necessary to operate all fire department equipment.
