Go Play Pictou County Equipment Loan Program: View the New Glasgow Equipment Guide here: https://newglasgow.ca/go-play.html and e-mail with your loan request. Equipment is picked up on Thursdays and returned on Tuesdays.
 
Art at Night: New Glasgow's Art at Night is a great opportunity to walk around Downtown New Glasgow while celebrating art, community and culture. The event takes place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and admission is free. Learn more here: https://artatnight.ca/

Miss Miles Mother's Day Classic: Join the YMCA of Pictou County on Mother’s Day for the annual Miss Miles 5 km Fun Run. You can celebrate the strength and beauty of women by running in this all-female event. Women of all ages come together to run or walk to celebrate the day. NS Walks Day: Nova Scotia Walk Day takes place on May 14th and celebrates how walking connects us to our communities and to each other. Join us for a lunch time walk and/or a coastal guided hike to celebrate walkable communities!
 
Lunch Time Walks: Celebrate NS Walks Day all week long with daily 40-minute lunch time walks. Break up your time spent sitting during the work day, or take a walking brain break! Walks will take place daily from May 12th-16th. Meet us at the Riverside Gazebo (155 Riverside Parkway) at 12:10 p.m. sharp!
 
Coastal Guided Hikes: MPALs in Pictou County are working together to bring you the Coastal Guided Hike Series. Hike 25km along coastal trails and beaches and you will earn the Pictou County Coast Badge from Hike Nova Scotia! Walking Audits: A walking audit is a tool to measure the walkability of a community. In other words, how easy is it to get around by walking or using a mobility device. During a walk audit, participants take a walk or roll to observe their surroundings. Join Make Your Move New Glasgow for Walk Audits in each ward of town. 
  • Ward One: Tuesday, May 20 6:00 p.m. Meet at the Ward One Social & Recreation Centre (487 Brother Street)
  • Ward Two: Thursday, May 29 6:00 p.m. Meet at the North End Recreation Centre (534 High Street)
  • Ward Three: Thursday, June 5 6:00 p.m. Meet at the West Side Community Centre (181 Lavinia Street)

 

Ward Walks Neighbourhood Walking Groups: Join a walking group in your neighbourhood this spring and summer! For more information or to let us know you’re coming, contact or 902-755-8363. 

  • Ward One: First walk May 26 9:00 a.m. Meet at the Ward One Social & Recreation Centre (487 Brother Street)
  • Ward Two: First walk June 4 10:00 a.m. Meet at the North End Recreation Centre (534 High Street)
  • Ward Three: First walk May 30 9:00 a.m. Meet at the West Side Community Centre (181 Lavinia Street)

 

West Side Tennis Courts

West Side Tennis Court memberships are available for the 2025 tennis season!

Memberships can be purchased at New Glasgow Town Hall (111 Provost Street) Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Memberships include free court time, lessons with our certified tennis instructor and all events hosted by the Town of New Glasgow at the tennis courts.

Membership Fees:

  • Youth (5-17) $35
  • Adult (18-64) $50
  • Senior (65+) $35
  • Family $120

The West Side Tennis Courts will open mid-to-late May and remain open until October. Tennis court opening and closing dates are weather dependent. Tennis lessons will begin on Thursday, July 3, 2025, and run until Thursday, August 21, 2025. Contact the Department of Community Development at  or 902-755-8363 to register for tennis lessons.

Hike Nova Scotia Hiker Challenge

The Hiker Challenge is all about inspiring, motivating and rewarding you - especially new and novice hikers - for getting out on Nova Scotia's beautiful trails to start hiking or to hike more. It's tailored to showcase the best of the province while providing helpful and fun challenges in doing so. Your reward for completing each challenge is a badge to show off on clothing or backpacks, as well as being listed on Hike Nova Scotia's Honour Roll. Each season Hike Nova Scotia does a prize draw for a gift card to The Trail Shop, including everyone who has earned a badge in the last three months.

Go Play Pictou County Equipment Loan Program

The GO PLAY Pictou County Equipment Loan Program offers an inventory listing of recreational equipment that is currently available for loan by the various municipal units in Pictou County. Our goal is to promote an active lifestyle while encouraging people to explore our beautiful community.

To borrow a piece of equipment, simply fill out the online form and the appropriate person will be in contact with you.

Hospital & NSH Community Building Walking Routes

Like walking or running and looking for some routes? We partnered with Healthy Pictou County and local illustrator Bonnie Fraser of Sydney and Surrey to prepare some walking routes from the hospital, the NSH Community Buildings, and other businesses and organizations in the area. Visit this page for some routes for a pre-work or post-work run/walk, a little break outside, or a nice evening event or family activity to socialize and be active!
