Committees of Council - Citizen Opportunities for 2025

TOWN OF NEW GLASGOW
CALL FOR CITIZEN APPLICATIONS

The Town of New Glasgow is inviting citizens to apply to serve on the following committees that assist Council with achieving its goals and objectives for the community:

ACCESSIBILITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The main focus of this Committee is to provide advice to Council on identifying, preventing, and eliminating barriers to people with disabilities in municipal programs, services, initiatives, and facilities. The committee plays a pivotal role in helping the Town of New Glasgow to become an accessible community and meet its obligations under Nova Scotia’s Accessibility Act.

Three-year Term Available         4 Representatives from the Disabled Community in New Glasgow at large.

 

AUDIT COMMITTEE

The main function of this committee is to assist the Council in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities, outlined in the Municipal Government Act (MGA), related to the quality and integrity of financial reporting along with ensuring the appropriate systems and controls for the proper recording of transaction and protection of assets are in place.

Two-year Term Available           1 Citizen Representative at Large from New Glasgow. 
(The citizen must possess knowledge and understanding of financial and investment matters with a preferred CPA designation.)

 

BUSINESS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The main focus of this Committee is to provide input on matters related to business promotion and business development within New Glasgow.

Three-year Term Available
1 Business Representative from the East River Road Business Corridor.
1 Business Representative from the Westside Plaza.
2 Business Representatives from the Downtown Business Core.
1 Business Representative from the Stellarton/Westville Road Business Corridor.

 

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The main focus areas of this Committee include: Recreation & Active Living Services, Heritage, Community Events, Beautification Projects, Glasgow Square, Tourism, and Arts & Culture.

Three-year Term Available
1 Citizen Representative from Ward 1 (Southend).
1 Citizen Representative from Ward 2 (Northend).
1 Citizen Representative from Ward 3 (Westside).

 

COMMUNITY CLIMATE CHANGE COMMITTEE

The main focus of this Committee is to advise Council and the Climate Change Steering Committee on the actions and initiatives to promote climate resilience and drive reductions in community greenhouse gas emissions.

Three-year Term available
1 Citizen Representative from Ward 1.
1 Citizen Representative from Ward 2.
1 Citizen Representative from Ward 3.
2 Youth Representatives from Pictou County.

 

FORBES LAKE WATERSHED SOURCE WATER PROTECTION COMMITTEE

The main focus of this Committee is to provide input and advice on the matters of source water and Forbes Lake watershed protection.

Three-year Term Available         1 Citizen Representative from the Eastside (Ward 1 & Ward 2).

 

PLANNING ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The main focus of this Committee is to review, evaluate and provide recommendations to Council on matters related to new development proposals, zoning and planning document amendments, and overall land use planning goals and objectives of the Town.

Three-year Term Available         1 Citizen Representative at Large (from any of the 3 Wards).

 

NEW GLASGOW REGIONAL POLICE COMMISSION

The main function of this Commission is to provide civilian governance on behalf of the Council in relation to the enforcement of law, the maintenance of law and order and the prevention of crime within the Towns of New Glasgow and Trenton.

Three-year Term Available          1 Citizen Representative from the Eastside (Ward 1 & Ward 2).

 

If you are interested in volunteering for one of the committee positions but would like additional information, please contact the undersigned.  As part of your application for a committee, please submit the name of the committee of interest and a brief account of your background/qualifications as it relates to the respective committee and why you are interested in participating in the work of this Committee on or before Friday, April 11, 2025 at 12 p.m. A criminal record and volunteer sector check are required.
