Mayor's Message
As I serve my third term as Mayor and my fourth term on Council, I reflect upon and am ever mindful of the great privilege it is to work for the citizens of New Glasgow.
New Glasgow is a beautiful riverside town with a rich history of enterprise, a strong spirit of entrepreneurship, creativity, social enterprise and imagination. We live in Mi'kma'ki and recognize the Mi’kmaq as the first people of our region and province since time immemorial. We have great respect and appreciation for New Glasgow’s African Nova Scotian heritage as a designated African Nova Scotian community; acknowledge our Scottish connections and have pride in our long-standing history of diversity and continued expansion and growth.
We have much to be proud of as a community as we work together on both opportunities and challenges. This year marks our 150 anniversary as an incorporated town and 241 years since our community began. It has been a storied journey and there is much potential to move forward as we begin a new chapter. We want the 150 anniversary celebrations to be a lasting legacy that pays tribute to New Glasgow’s past, celebrates the present and helps shape the future.
It will be a year long celebration that marks the journey and story of New Glasgow through an inclusive, positive, respectful, and joyful approach. There will be a summer weekly concert series, park parties, heritage displays, special events, an international town criers competition, pop up shows, a drone show, guild exhibits and much more.
Our Town is growing! We welcome all who have chosen to make New Glasgow their home. We strive to be an inclusive and welcoming community where those who have lived here all of their lives and those who only recently call New Glasgow home, all feel a sense of belonging, connection and being valued.
The Town of New Glasgow has had a long-standing commitment to investing in strong infrastructure and quality water as the foundation of a strong community. It was a remarkable vision by those pioneers who came many years before us to invest in a water source that continues to supply us with a reliable and safe supply of drinking water. We continue to protect this incredible resource. Through an Asset Management Plan, the Town continues to upgrade as well as determine service levels that support our citizens.
We are committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of our community. The Town has prioritized a Climate Action Plan that addresses meaningful work that must take place as we witness imminent and historic weather patterns that affect our infrastructure and quality of life. We have engaged our citizens and other orders of government as we move forward with this top priority. It is important to citizens of all ages to have the necessary infrastructure and programs that allow for healthy lifestyle choices and an environment where businesses may flourish.
Your ideas, comments, and concerns are always welcome as we continue our commitment to the essential services provided by our Town Staff. Working together in an open and respectful manner is the way we can move forward with promise.
Throughout the year, we will celebrate the path New Glasgow has taken from a trading post, to status as a town, to a mercantile centre, to a shipbuilding & industrial leader, to our role as a commercial service centre and ultimately, a regional service centre and cultural and creative hub in 2025.
We also extend a warm welcome to visitors from throughout the province, across the nation and indeed around the world to uncover the many fun festivals, unique eateries, boutique shops, concerts, markets, art works, museums, parks, trails and other attractions our town and region have to offer throughout the summer and fall.
