News Release - New Glasgow Pre-Canada Day Celebrations Set for June 30 in Parkdale

New Glasgow, NS, June 16, 2025. The Town of New Glasgow will kick off Canada Day Celebrations with a free family event on Monday, June 30th, featuring live entertainment, activities for all ages, and special recognition of the 150th anniversary of New Glasgow’s incorporation as a Town.

This years annual Pre-Canada Day Celebration will take place from 5:30-7:30pm at the Scott W. Weeks Sports Complex in Parkdale. The evenings entertainment is headlined by Petra Moriarty, the 2024 winner of the Jubilee’s Battle of the Bands, along with a new local group Switch-Up.

Petra Moriarty is a 17-year-old singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist. whose talent has been showcased across the region. In addition to her musical achievements, including opening for The Jubilee. She starred as “Dorothy” in North Nova Education Centre’s Wizard of Oz as well as “Gypsy” in the deCoste Centre’s production of Gypsy. Petra says she loves being able to play her music for people all over the region.

Switch-Up,a high-energy rock band features high school students Henry Oakley, Gwen Taylor and Ethan Watson.  the trio met through their school’s music program and  quickly bonded over their shared passion for performance, eventually forming their own band.

New Glasgow Mayor Nancy Dicks says, “New Glasgow takes pride in hosting an evening of activities, music and games in celebration of our country’s birthday. The event will feature the Mayor’s Sweet Treat Social, where guests can find beautifully decorated Canada Day and New Glasgow 150-themed cookies, handmade by local baker Carol Curley, we well as a free community BBQ.

Mayor Dicks continues, “It is always wonderful to showcase local talent, and our Community Development team has lined up many fun games and activities. We are proud to live in one of the best countries in the world and we never take being Canadians for granted. It is an opportunity to come together as a community, to celebrate our multicultural mosaic, our common values and way of life.”

Additional activities include bouncy castles, face painting, balloon art, New Glasgow 150-them crafts and lawn games.
