New Glasgow, NS (September 27, 2024) – The Town of New Glasgow has appointed Ryan Leil as the new Chief of the New Glasgow Regional Police (NGRP). During the Town Council Meeting held on Monday, September 16, 2024, Leil was sworn in as the Chief, following the retirement of former Chief Stephen Chisholm.

Since joining the New Glasgow Regional Police in 2004, Leil has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community service. His contributions to the department and the Town of New Glasgow have spanned through various roles, including Constable, Detective Sergeant, Deputy Chief, Mentor, and Coach. Leil's dedication to both our long-term strategic goals and the personal well-being of those he serves has been exemplary.

While expressing gratitude towards his family, friends, colleagues, and the officers at NGRP, Leil said, “It is an absolute honour to step into this role as Chief of Police in the community I have called home my entire life. Having worked in policing for the past 20 years and choosing to raise my family here in New Glasgow, I have a deep commitment to the Town and its people.” He added, “Our strength as a community comes from the relationships we build and the trust we nurture. I believe that true public safety is about more than enforcement—it’s about engagement, listening, and understanding the unique needs of the people we serve.”

“Ryan brings vast experience and a wholesome understanding of the role of policing in today’s ever-changing world. He has a great appreciation for our community and will strive to embrace partnerships and relationships that will work on making our community safe,” said Mayor Nancy Dicks.

“Ryan’s leadership, dedication, and commitment to public safety make him an excellent choice for this important role. I have every confidence that under his guidance, the New Glasgow Regional Police will continue to uphold the highest standards of service and community engagement,” said NGRP Commission Chair Scott McKenzie while congratulating Leil.

The New Glasgow Regional Police serve the Towns of New Glasgow and Trenton, providing 24-hour policing services, covering a combined geographical area and population of almost 16,000 square kilometers and over 12,000 residents.
