Announcement Marks a New Era for Long-Term Care in New Glasgow

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Announcement Marks a New Era for Long-Term Care in New Glasgow
New Glasgow, Nova Scotia – October 31, 2025

After years of planning, collaboration, and dedication, the vision for a new long-term care home in New Glasgow is becoming a reality. The official groundbreaking ceremony for the 144-bed long-term care home will take place in the very near future and the new site will be on Little Harbour Road in New Glasgow, marking the start of construction on a modern, resident-centered home that will replace the aging Glen Haven Manor.

Designed to meet the evolving needs of Nova Scotia’s seniors, the new long-term care home will provide a warm, welcoming environment where residents can thrive, share meaningful moments, and remain connected to their community. The home’s design focuses on comfort, safety, and quality of life, featuring smaller, self-contained households; each with its own dining, living, and activity spaces. Every resident will enjoy a private room and washroom, supporting both dignity and enhanced infection prevention and control. Additional features include a spacious community gathering room, hair salon, rehabilitation and wellness space, and secure outdoor areas that promote recreation and engagement.

The project represents the collective efforts of many dedicated individuals, the Town of New Glasgow, High-Crest Enterprises, the amazing staff at Glen Haven Manor, and Nova Scotia Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care. The Building Committee for the replacement of Glen Haven Manor and the Town of New Glasgow have demonstrated unwavering commitment to ensuring our seniors have access to high-quality care close to home. High-Crest Enterprises, an experienced long-term care provider, will oversee construction and manage ongoing operations once the home is complete. High-Crest Enterprises is the current operator of Glen Haven Manor.

Collaboration has been central to the project’s success, with architects, engineers, designers, builders, staff, and consultants working closely alongside the Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care’s infrastructure team to bring this vision to life and ensure it meets modern design and care standards.

The future groundbreaking ceremony will bring together residents, families, staff, and community partners to celebrate this significant milestone. Once completed, the new home will stand as a cornerstone of compassionate care for seniors in New Glasgow and across Pictou County.

Quote from Glen Haven Manor Corporation Chairperson, Jocelyn Dorrington:
On behalf of the Glen Haven Manor Corporation Board, I want to extend our sincere appreciation to all four current municipal owners (New Glasgow, Stellarton, Trenton, and Westville) for their many years of partnership and stewardship of the provincial funding that provides quality long-term care for our residents. As we move forward with the replacement of Glen Haven Manor, we acknowledge the decision of three municipalities to conclude their ownership and stewardship role of the provincial funds, and we thank them for their commitment to ensuring a smooth and respectful transition. Their continued collaboration for this ownership transition of the municipal housing corporation to the Town of New Glasgow has been instrumental in positioning us to advance the development of a new long-term care home that will continue to serve our community’s seniors with the dignity, comfort, and care they deserve.”

Quote from Minister of Seniors and Long-Term Care, Barbara Adams:
Announcing the location of the new Glen Haven Manor home marks an important milestone in the construction of this new facility that will become a vital part of the local community. Once built it will be a modern, comfortable long-term care home where seniors will live with dignity and receive expert care. This facility is part of a province-wide investment in over 50 new and replacement facilities that will serve generations to come.”

Quote from Mayor of the Town of New Glasgow, Nancy Dicks:
This announcement represents more than just the start of construction; it marks a renewed commitment to the dignity and well-being of our aging citizens for our community. Our seniors have spent their lives building the communities in which they have lived and they deserve a home that reflects the same care, respect, and quality they have given to others. This new facility will not only enhance the quality of life for residents but will also provide peace of mind to families knowing their loved ones are receiving exceptional care in a modern, comfortable, and supportive environment right here in New Glasgow.

Quote from MLA Pictou Centre, Danny MacGillivray:
"This new long-term care home in New Glasgow will be a great addition to Pictou County. I am looking forward to when this facility is complete, the doors opened, and the community gets to welcome its new neighbours to their new home.”

Quote from High-Crest Enterprises CEO, Marcus Stephenson
Working alongside the Town of New Glasgow and the incredible staff at Glen Haven Manor, we’re dedicated to building and operating a long-term care home that sets a new standard for quality senior living and compassion. The new long-term care home in New Glasgow will serve as a lasting reflection of our shared commitment to supporting seniors with the respect and care they deserve.”

Tribute to the Legacy of the Run Against Racism and Henderson Paris

For Immediate Release

Tribute to the Legacy of the Run Against Racism and Henderson Paris

New Glasgow, September 23, 2025:

A tribute to the legacy of the Run Against Racism and Henderson Paris will be held on Friday, October 3 as part of the New Glasgow 150 Anniversary celebrations. The run, which began 35 years ago, and which lasted for two decades, made a lasting and enduring impact on the region as well throughout Nova Scotia and beyond. A walk will take place from Abercrombie Road, down to George Street and across the bridge and will be followed by a special rally at Glasgow Square Theatre.

“Henderson Paris made a lasting impact with his stand against racism.” states New Glasgow Mayor Nancy Dicks. “As a human rights leader, and as a community leader, Henderson’s story deserves to be celebrated. He inspired generations and today’s generations will also be uplifted by his story.”

“All kids seek connections; this event brings energy, enthusiasm and hope with messages of empowerment and a focus on what unites us!” adds Erin Cormier, Supervisor, Celtic Family of Schools, Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education.

The 38 mile (km) run which Paris initiated in 1990 followed a racial incident that one of his sons experienced. He assured the run was designed to include the communities of the area- Pictou Landing First Nation, his hometown of New Glasgow, Stellarton, Westville, Trenton, Pictou and the rural municipality of Pictou County and that it be a catalyst for change. It was also important to the run’s founder to engage youth and throughout the years, thousands of students and community members took part, united in a cause to nurture respect for diversity, unity and inclusion. Throughout the 20 years of the run as well as the 10 years that followed with another event in his honour, the Marathon of Respect and Equality (MORE) that Henderson served as honorary chair, he was officially recognized by local, provincial and national organizations.

“It is my belief that the R.A.R. event, which over its twenty-year existence, positively impacted and created an awareness that racial discrimination in all forms must be eliminated! This tribute speaks volumes as to how far we have advanced over the course of 150 years.” comments Henderson Paris.

“Then, and even more so now, with global troubling times that we are experiencing, the Run’s logo is just as relevant today, thirty-five years later.” - “Together We Can Make a Difference.”

Members of the public wishing to take part in the tribute walk may gather at the Maranatha Bible Church by 9:45 a.m., while authorized students from the Celtic Family of Schools will be bused and meet at the Christian Fellowship Church. The student procession will lead the walk with Henderson, members of his family and town representatives at 10:00am. Public participants will proceed immediately after the student group. More students will join their student peers at Carmichael Park. The rally will feature student musical performances along with presentations and remarks all in tribute to Henderson and the legacy of his run. This tribute has been created with the goal of continuing his message of respect, harmony and equality for all. The motto “together we can make a difference” was the motto of the original run and is a mantra Henderson still believes in.

Please note there will be a police escort, brief road closures and other safety measures in place for this special event. The community is also invited to the rally at Glasgow Square which will begin at approximately 10:40a.m., on October 3, 2025.
