In accordance with the rules, regulations, and guidelines of the Province of Nova Scotia and applicable Town Policies and By‐Laws, the TNG is soliciting proposals from qualified companies (“Service Provider”), with a proven track record of Civil engineering design in the Wastewater collection, I&I and wastewater modelling.
The Service Provider (Proponent) must have significant (>10 years) experience with the design, engineering, and modelling of wastewater collection systems. The Service Provider must have a license to practice in the Province of Nova Scotia.
The proposal must demonstrate a thorough understanding and complete response to the specific requirements of this project as set out in the Request for Proposal.

Environmental Services Maintenance Worker – Water Utility
Position Title: Maintenance Worker – Environmental Services
Reports to: Supervisor – Environmental Services
Period: Full Time
Note: Probation period applies before being made permanent.
Classification: Maintenance Worker – Environmental Services (OIT Certification Min.)
THIS MOMENT, THIS POSITION
The Maintenance Worker (Environmental Services Department) is primarily responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of water and sewer distribution mains (storm and sanitary), service laterals, valves and valve boxes, manholes, catch basins, fire hydrants, and sewer lift stations. Additional Duties of the Maintenance Worker include but are not limited to:
• Installation, repair, and maintenance of underground municipal infrastructure assets: water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems.
• Responsible for competently operating heavy equipment related to the operation and maintenance of municipal infrastructure. Excavation experience is critical for this position.
• Responsible for ensuring their duties are carried out in an effective, efficient, competent, and safe manner in relation to themselves and fellow employees.
• Perform safe excavations to water and sewer-related work, using an excavator and/or backhoe.
• Hydro-excavate for piped infrastructure, services, natural gas lines, etc.
• Add gravel to utility cuts and other holes in the street to maintain a minimum level of street smoothness.
• Prepare streets for capital paving by adjusting manholes, catch basins, and valve boxes.
• Use of video inspection equipment to perform and plan for duties.
• Perform hydro-excavation and sewer line flushing.
• Operate sidewalk plows, backhoe, loader, and plow/salt trucks in snow clearing operations.
• Operate excavator, backhoe & loader in day-to-day operations, and snow clearing.
• Operate other equipment and perform labour duties in various pipe installations and all other maintenance and repair projects carried out by the Public Works Department.
• Follow all applicable Occupational Health & Safety policies & procedures, and those policies & procedures of the Town.
• Operate all light utility vehicles of the Public Works fleet for various purposes.
• Perform traffic control duties as assigned.
ADITIONAL DUTIES & EXPECTATIONS
• Operate competently all heavy equipment including 3-to-5-ton trucks, backhoes, loaders, in a safe and effective manner for cleaning, maintenance, installation, repair, construction surface drainage systems, water and sewer systems, parking lots and other municipal properties.
• Perform labour duties associated with all municipal repair and maintenance projects carried out by the Environmental Services Department.
• Perform routine checks, minor servicing, cleaning, and basic maintenance of the equipment being operated, including checking fluid levels and grease as necessary
• Inform the Mechanics of any required significant maintenance or safety problems of equipment being operated.
• Assist in snow removal operations as required.
• Read water meters.
HOURS OF WORK
Hours of work are primarily Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (40-hour work week) overtime is anticipated and expected to accommodate work and emergency requirements.
Overtime also includes scheduled OT, callouts, and a regular rotation in on-call duties minimum 1 week per month.
The Provincial Hours of Service Regulations are used to manage hours of work. Water and sewer
emergency work will be in accordance with provincial regulations. On-call work is required to provide 24- hour emergency service. The terms of employment will require the worker to be available for both overtime work and on-call work.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate should have a thorough knowledge of water distribution systems, which is mandatory for this position. Department of Environment (NSE) Operator Certification will be required to work in the Environmental Services Department. Accepts ongoing training to remain current in position. Maintains a Register of Motor Vehicles (NS) vehicle license(s) to operate all trucks and equipment within the department.
EDUCATION AND BACKGROUND
Minimum qualifications include:
• Completion of Grade 12 education.
• Ability to pass a Criminal Background check.
• Pass/provide a Class 3 Nova Scotia driver’s medical.
• Valid Class 3 with air brakes endorsement Nova Scotia driver’s license.
• Physical ability and fitness for moderate to heavy physical exertion.
• Minimum five (5) years experience in a municipal operations environment for water and wastewater/sewer and snow removal.
• Ability to understand and apply written and oral instruction.
• Required to have a Nova Scotia Environment & Climate Change Operator in training certification.
• Required to have or acquire a Nova Scotia Environment & Climate Change Level I Operator Certification for Water Distribution within one year of the date of permanent hire and maintain this certification for the duration of employment through continuing education, CEU credits annually.
• Required to have or acquire a Nova Scotia Environment & Climate Change Level I Operator Certification for Wastewater Collection within two years of the date of hire and maintain this certification for the duration of employment through continuing education, CEU credits annually.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Operator Certificate for Excavator with a minimum of five (5) years of competent operating experience for trenching.
• Excavating and Trenching Training (valid and current).
• Minimum five (5) years as heavy equipment operator including excavator, backhoe, wheel loader, and tandem truck with float.
• Level II Operator Certification for Water Distribution
• Level II Operator Certification for Wastewater Collection
• Natural Gas Awareness Training
• Clean Driver’s Abstract

Trans Canada Trail in New Glasgow

Did you know that there are two sections of the Trans Canada Trail in New Glasgow?
The “Pictou to New Glasgow Water Trail” is a 16.3km section along Amasipukwejk (The East River) starting from the public docks outside of Glasgow Square Theatre. Paddlers can use this section to travel all the way to the Pictou Harbour!
The 3.5km long “Town of New Glasgow Trail” takes users along North Provost Street, George Street and the Samson Trail. This section links up with the Albion Trail to the south, and the Town of Trenton to the north, in addition to the Pictou to New Glasgow Water Trail.
Public Docks Replacement

The Town of New Glasgow is pleased to share that the public docks outside Glasgow Square Theatre (155 Riverside Parkway) have been replaced with new EZ Dock floating docks. This project was supported through $33,000 from the Province of Nova Scotia’s Recreation Facility Development Grant and $27,200 from the Trans Canada Trail’s Trail Catalyst Fund.
The new docks replace the aging wooden dock system with durable, low-maintenance materials expected to last more than 40 years. This investment improves safety, accessibility, and public access to Amasipukwejk (The East River) for residents and visitors.
The docks support recreational use for paddlers, include the existing accessible kayak launch, and are also used annually for the Race on the River Pictou County Dragon Boat Festival.
We look forward to seeing this waterfront space continue to be enjoyed for many years to come! Thank you to the Province of Nova Scotia and Trans Canada Trail for investing in our community.

Town of New Glasgow Announces Two Summer Performance Series
July 9, 2026, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia - The Town of New Glasgow is pleased to announce two summer performance series taking place in New Glasgow this July, August, and September, offering free and accessible entertainment opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages.
Both series are supported by Support 4 Culture and the Province of Nova Scotia.
The 30th Anniversary Summer Concert Series, presented by the Town of New Glasgow and The Jubilee, will bring live music to several locations every Saturday leading up to The Jubilee. Performances will take place from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. and are free and open to all ages. The series begins on Saturday, July 11 at The Elks Lodge, 42 Provost Street, New Glasgow, with performances by The Clue and The Mallards. It continues on Saturday, July 18 at the Jubilee Office, 121 George Street, New Glasgow, with acoustic performances by Brynn Currie and Big Name Actors. The final performance before The Jubilee will take place on Saturday, July 25 at East Side Alley, 612 East River Road, New Glasgow, featuring 11th & Duke and The Quiet Wild.
The Town of New Glasgow is also presenting Summer for Everyone, a series of accessible programming at Glasgow Square Theatre and community spaces. This series is designed to help make live entertainment more inclusive and available to the community through free and “pay what you will” options.
Summer for Everyone begins on Sunday, July 12 at 1:00 p.m. with Songs From The Square, featuring Luka Hall and Irish Millie at Glasgow Square Theatre. On Wednesday, July 22, Andre Pettipas will perform at Murdoch Park at 12:00 noon as part of the Road to Giantstock II. This performance is free and all ages are welcome.
On Monday, July 27 and Tuesday, July 28, Icarus Theatre will present Constellations at 7:30 p.m. at Glasgow Square Theatre. The series continues on Sunday, August 9 at 1:00 p.m. with another Songs From The Square performance, featuring Ella Gunning Parker and ADINA. The final event will take place on Saturday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m. with a Green Room Session featuring Mat Hughes.
Songs From The Square performances and the Andre Pettipas performance do not require a ticket. Constellations and Mat Hughes require a “Pay What You Will” Ticketpro ticket. Donations collected will support Glasgow Square Theatre’s Moments for Everyone program. Tickets are available at www.glasgowsquare.com or through the Glasgow Square Box Office.
